Advantages and disadvantages of teleworking

June 25 2023

Teleworking has grown in popularity in recent years, with the practice particularly prominent during the Covid-19 pandemic. Teleworking is the practice of working remotely, usually from home, using online communication tools to collaborate with colleagues and employers. Like any work arrangement, teleworking has its advantages and disadvantages. This article aims to examine the main advantages and disadvantages of telecommuting.

Advantages of teleworking:

Flexibility: teleworking allows for greater organization in work schedules. Because employees can better adapt their work hours to suit their personal life needs, a greater and more positive impact on work/life balance can be observed.

Cost Savings: teleworking allows for a significant reduction in commuting costs, meals and childcare.

Productivity: Teleworking can increase productivity by allowing people to work in a more comfortable, less stressful and impersonal environment than an open office. They can also avoid some common workplace distractions, such as unnecessary meetings, constant interruptions or ambient noise.

Traffic Reduction: Teleworking can also help reduce the number of vehicles on the road and help reduce congestion, noise and pollution in cities.

Disadvantages of teleworking :

Isolation: Working from home can sometimes be synonymous with isolation, as employees have less opportunity to interact in person with their colleagues and employers. Let's not forget that human beings are first and foremost social beings and that the physical presence of others and the possibility of communicating directly with them contributes to maintaining motivation, productivity and, by extension, good mental health.

Difficulty separating work and personal life: Employees may have difficulty separating their work and personal lives when working from home. This can lead to work overload and especially a loss of work-life balance. Depending on where you live, it is not always possible to dedicate a space to your professional activity: the kitchen table becomes the office, which in some cases you have to share with your spouse who is also teleworking and who, for the needs of his or her activity, has to talk all day on the phone or in teleconference. While we need peace and quiet and end up in the bedroom, sitting on the bed, laptop on our knees...

Communication problems: Working remotely can sometimes lead to communication problems, especially if the online communication tools are not working properly or if employees are not communicating enough.

Difficulty maintaining motivation: Working from home can be less challenging than working in an office environment. Workers may find it difficult to stay motivated and maintain productivity. This is especially true when working in a team environment where questions may need to be asked that require a quick response.

Challenges related to integration: How can a new employee be optimally integrated if he or she must learn to use new software, new work practices and of course integrate into a new team if everything must be done remotely?

In conclusion: The practice of teleworking has become increasingly important in recent years. It is important for employers to understand the advantages and disadvantages of teleworking and to allow employees to find a balance between their professional and personal lives.
